Preparing for our next trip
Last weekend was an awesome Missions Conference at CBC. Most definitely the best one I have ever attended. We heard speakers from all over the world and it was great to get a report on the big things God is doing in people's lives.
The church was introduced to our 2011 ISP team and able to see a film about the Teacher's Convocation we will be doing in Guatemala at the end of this month.
The team has spent time together going over the curriculum, preparing the lesson activities, and making list of the last minute school supplies we'll need to get.
At this time, most of the funds have come in for our team and we will be making the final preparations this week. Please continue to pray for us as we finish up the last few things on our list and familiarize ourselves with the curriculum. Also pray for our interpreters as they are being selected and assigned, that we will get great matches and opportunities to share with them.

Moses....
After years of spending Sunday mornings in Sunday School, I often think of Moses as a man afraid. Afraid to step closer to the burning bush; afraid to speak before Pharaoh. A man full of excuses.
However, as I have read through the Pentateuch's over the last few weeks, I have noticed how God didn't stop with Moses and his excuses. For every excuse, God had an answer. For every scary situation, God was with him. God had a clear plan for his life. Over the years in the wilderness, it is amazing to see the man that God developed from the man who fled Egypt in fear.
As I finish reading Deuteronomy today, I marvel at the way Moses' life is described. In Deut. 34:5, he is called for the first time the name by which he seems to be remembered the most, "Moses the servant of the Lord." It is his crowning honor. I wonder, what words would follow my name in the end? How can one achieve the honor of being remembered as a servant of the Lord?
In Deut. 34:10, it says that "there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, in all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to do...by all that mighty power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel." As I read it, I am amazed how God transformed the man full of fear and excuses into a man full of "mighty power" and "great terror" by having a relationship with Him.
It is amazing what God can and will do with a life given to Him.

Thank you!
A big "Thank You!" to those of you that have given towards this convocation! I know that your reward will be more than you can comprehend. The finances are coming in and there is just a few more days to make the goal. God is faithful and I know it will all be in place by the time ISP needs to order our plane tickets.
I received my Small Group Facilitator Guide on Monday and have been looking it through to refresh my memory.
Throughout the past year, I have been stocking up on school supplies to take with me for the teachers. Right now I have a box full that when packed, should fill my entire carry on! Thank goodness it has wheels!

Training Begins Today
We had our first training together with CBC and Riverlakes today. It was a great time of reuniting with the ones we traveled with last year and meeting new team members.
Today we went through the process of what we will be doing in Guatemala, confirmed when we will be leaving Bakersfield and set another training time for Feb. 13th.
In the meantime, the group from CBC will be meeting Sunday, Jan. 23rd, for a chance to share life maps and for the new team members to make theirs.
A life map is simply one's life story. Everyone has a story.
We take a few memorable moments in our life, show some ups and downs that made us who we are today, and share a point where we have forgiven someone or someone has forgiven us. This is the activity the teachers will do on the day we teach the "Forgiveness" lesson. Once they have drawn their life map, I will start by sharing mine and then the teachers in my group will be able to share their story. This is an activity that brings us to a common ground. After all, every life has its fair share of struggles. It's awesome to be able to share the reason I can forgive is because God is with me & in me and I have been forgiven.
Please continue to pray:
*for the teachers in Guatemala whom we will be instructing. Pray that they will be able to attend the Convocation and all obstacles will be removed.
*Also, continue to pray that everyone's support will come in and that God will be glorified.
*for those preparing to go that haven't been before. Pray that they will be able to make sense of all they are learning and put together a life map that will reach out to the teachers in their group.
I can't believe this trip is already next month! I am excited! Today it seemed like it became a reality and last year's trip was just yesterday. I love being a part of this and feel so blessed to be used of God to spread His Truth. Thank you for all your prayers and support. May God bless you abundantly.

It's Time For Another Teacher's Convocation
Here it is 2011 and the time for our next Teacher's Convocation is coming up quickly! We will be traveling, Friday, February 18th, and arriving into Guatemala City early Saturday morning. The first day, we will spend waiting for all the other volunteers to arrive. They will be coming from several US states and as far north as Canada. When everyone has arrived without delay, hopefully, we will have a nice dinner and reunite with old friends while meeting new ones.
The next two days will be filled with training and refreshing ourselves with the curriculum we will be instructing the teachers to use.
Once we are prepared, the Convocation will begin! The teachers will come from all over the area to receive this free training, the free curriculum and the continuing education certificate from the Minister of Education. This is such an exciting time! We will meet these teachers and in the very few hours we will spend with them, we will form bonds of friendship. They are very sweet and open people. I look forward to sharing my friendship with Christ and my experience of forgiveness with them.
When the week comes to an end, there will be exchanging email addresses and parting gifts; lots of pictures and hugs of goodbye.
However, during the short time we have remaining before we depart, we are working on the last few details, reviewing the curriculum and raising the rest of our support.
If you would like to be a part of this project, please remember to pray for us. We need prayers that our support will come in a timely manner and that we will have safe travels. Also pray for the teachers as they prepare to come to the convocation. They will need to take time off, usually without pay, as well as pay their own way to the convocation. This may prove to be a hardship for some. Please pray the that obstacles will be removed and every teacher who needs this will be able to make it to the convocation.
In addition, we still need support financially. If you'd like to make a tax free donation, you can pay online with a credit/debit card or PayPal. You can also mail me a check. Once the funds are received, you will get a receipt from Campus Crusade for Christ.

Natural Disasters
Guatemala's location between the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean makes it a target for hurricanes, such as Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and Hurricane Stan in October 2005, which killed more than 1,500 people. The damage was not wind related, but rather due to significant flooding and resulting mudslides.
Guatemala's highlands lie along the Motagua Fault, part of the boundary between the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates. This fault has been responsible for several major earthquakes in historic times, including a 7.5 magnitude tremor on February 4, 1976 which killed more than 25,000 people. In addition, the Middle America Trench, a major subduction zone lies off the Pacific coast. Here, the Cocos Plate is sinking beneath the Caribbean Plate, producing volcanic activity inland of the coast. Guatemala has 37 volcanoes, four of them are active:Pacaya, Santiaguito, Fuego and Tacaná. Fuego and Pacaya erupted in 2010.
Natural disasters have a long history in this geologically active part of the world. For example, two of the three moves of the capital of Guatemala have been due to volcanic mudflows in 1541 and earthquakes in 1773.
